Middlebury College and the Monterey Institute of International Studies are launching new residential language immersion programs for middle and high school students in 2008, along with varied technological applications that will link teachers and students in virtual language communities. It is a rapidly growing venture.
The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy seeks Teachers for the 2008 Summer Language Immersion Camp.
The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy Teachers are part of a community creating a language immersion camp experiences for middle and high school students each summer. Located on college campuses at three U.S. locations, MMLA offers students the fun of summer camp and the opportunity to study with skilled senior teachers and staff, immersing student campers in the Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, or Spanish language. The daily events and activities of the camp (meals, sports, drama, games, music, field trips, arts and crafts, etc.) are conducted in the target language. Along with language senior teachers and residential advisors, teachers adopt the Middlebury Language PledgeŽ, modified as needed for the student camper age group and language level, so that a full-immersion language environment is created.
The primary responsibilities of teachers are assisting language senior teachers in daily group sessions (i.e., informal classes); leading activities; interacting in the target language with student campers in each part of the day (meals, recreational activities, and cultural events); and motivating student campers to speak, read, and write in their target language. Teachers help individual student campers, lead group sessions as requested by the senior teachers, provide supervision for activities of student campers in their language group, assist with administrative tasks as needed, and generally help to ensure that the program runs smoothly. Teachers will have scheduled time off each day and week.
