For Long distance moves all movers are required by law to be licensed and insured by the US Department of Transportation's - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. For information on what you can expect from a moving company, see the USDOT FMCSA
For local moves (within NY state) all moving companies (including man with a van) are required by law to be licensed and insured by the New York Department of Transportation. The NY DOT also requires mover to state their address, phone number and DOT number in any advertisement such as on craigslist.org. If you do not see this information, the advertiser is probably breaking the law - i.e. a criminal. For NY DOT verification call (800) 786-5368, or e-mail nymoving@dot.state.ny.us. For BBB Verification call (516) 420-0500. Movers and all other service contractors are licensed in order to protect you, the customer from liability. You wouldn’t use an unlicensed doctor or lawyer.
