Oh please, you can't really be that stupid......fix it? Let me make this real simple for you: The parts that hold the bridge up are crumbling away under water. That is the part upon which the rest of the bridge is built. So how would you fix it? Jack it up, add two temporary piers for every deteriorating one, tear out all the bad ones, rebuild all the bad ones, then tear out all the temporary ones? Then what? Set the rusty, deteriorating hulk of steel back on the "new" piers. Open the bridge back up and then go through it all again in a year when the steel has rotted away? You HAVE to be a politician because I can't think of a more convoluted process. Let's make it simple.....tear the old bridge down, and build a new one in it's place. By the time it needs fixing again, no one alive today will be around to worry about it.

bicyclist (clothing explained)

While people don't like cyclists' clothing there is a purpose for it. Skin tight shorts are that way so that the fabric doesn't bunch up and create hot-spots. The inner pad has no stitches or seams unlike normal shorts which would again create hotspots. Using a wider cushioned seat would allow someone to use normal shorts but those types of seats are very inefficient for pedaling. The shorts are specific to the purpose, just as Carhartt pants are great for construction and outdoor use, but aren't good for skiing in. If you don't think it makes a difference, wear a pair of jeans pedaling a road bike for a distance of 10 miles. For the biker who wears regular shorts over the bike shorts - it completely defeats the purpose and I'm really sorry that you're that self-conscious. As for "full-kits", those who look like they're sponsored - maybe they are, maybe they're not, but its part of the culture. As for people who look gross in their tight bike shorts - often a new person to cycling who has gotten into the sport, bought what people recommended and are trying to become more active. An encouraging word instead of a disparaging remark would help someone who is a bit self-conscious given that it takes time to drop weight. As a homeowner and having two registered cars in the garage, I think I pay for my right to be on the road in addition to Vermont statute. Cyclists do stupid things. So do motorists. The common denominator is people. Cyclists are no more likely to break the law than the average motorist. Last time I clipped out and came to a full-stop at a stop-sign the guy behind me blew his horn at me because I was taking too long. Cyclists often get mixed messages about what to do - ride on the bikepath, you're too fast for the path, ride on the street, ride the sidewalk, don't ride the sidewalk, obey the laws but don't take too long, take the lane coming up to an intersection, don't take the lane because you'll get hit.

I too ride a bike, and I must admit that when I see guys all done up in their branded "race" shirts and spandex shorts I giggle at them. Let's face it, gents: You are not sponsored by anyone, and therefore are allowed to wear "normal" clothes. No, don't tell me about how aerodynamic the clothes are or comfort, etc. They are not. I have a pair of spandex shorts (with the butt-pad), which I wear underneath gym shorts so people don't have to see my ass in that way (This is out of respect for the rest of you by the way). And, I rarely wear those anyway - only for mountain biking. Lastly, I am very aware of cars, and the fact that I will lose that battle. I do not try to pretend I am a car. Yes, I have the same rights, but regardless of rights a bicycle will lose in a collision. So, I see it this way: would I rather assert my rights as a user of the road or suck it up and stay unharmed? Easy choice for me. Lastly, on busy roads with little shoulder I will ride (carefully) on the sidewalk. Route 15 from Winooski to Essex is a great example. Again: alive or proud. I choose alive.

So, in closing lose the silly bike clothes and learn to appreciate that you are much smaller than a car.

Oh my gosh. I live in a place where every five seconds there is a breed of people out there where you'd have no idea if they were men or women cause they all dress like girls in the colorful spandex fancy outfits. I think they think that they are "It" when they are on the road, because when they see me and other vehicles coming down the road, they intentionally and arrogantly move out into the middle of the damn road so that the vehicle can not make any attempt to get by! Vermont really needs to stop catering to the bicyclists and make some type of a plan with the road. Every one takes the country road I live on, because they don't want to stay on the Route 7 path like they should be doing. But, it's all screwed up because, for one, there is no room for any bike path, nor does one exist on parts of Shelburne Rd!! So, they start pulling out driving alongside the truckers and drivers. I mean, if theres no bike path, have some COMMON SENSE before driving alongside inches away from a tractor trailer! Then, even where there are CLEAR bike paths available, the bikers, I've seen, not even use them! They like weave in and out of the white line....... where I'm driving. Then, one's to beep at them, they get all bent out of shape by getting like bicycle ROAD RAGE by driving up to my window trying to yell at me. Then, another of one of the worst examples, the fancy spandex people driving in packs in a slow fashion taking up the whole country road. There will be like friggen 25 of them, and instead of driving in a more uniform fashion so that a truck can get by, they instead do the COMPLETE OPPOSITE and take up a country road and a half! You try to get by by beeping, and they ignore you. So, yea I have a very arrogant picture of them. I have two, three people in my famiily use bikes, but number one, you can tell if they are a girl or guy cause any guy I know would'nt dress like that and they aren't so arrogant driving down the road like that.

I agree with you, poster, up to a point. A large percentage of cyclists do, indeed, choose to ignore the rules of the road (it could be argued that a large percentage of motorists ignore the rules, too - texting, running yellow/red lights, speeding). In my opinion, they should be ticketed, just as motorists are. Here is where our views diverge:

"As long as they keep on thinking like that and ignoring the laws of the road, I cannot consider them anything more than an obstruction and an annoyance on the road."

Legally, you are obligated to treat them as other vehicles on the road. Period. Whether they're obeying the rules of the road or not. Viewing them as an "obstruction and an annoyance" and getting all pissed off doesn't change that.

Gays' Special Status (NEK)

First, let me disclose that I am a gay male.

One thing I find troubling in this life is any group of people who require others outside OR WITHIN their group to subscribe to a set list of ideas. This applies to Republicans just as much as it applies to Gays and Lesbians.

In my life as a gay man, I have had occasion to witness something akin to MOB mentality from the LGBT community. If you don't agree with A, B, C & D, you do not belong with us. Let me give an example:

In 1999, I was in Boston for the Gay Pride Festival. While there, I saw a booth sponsored by PLAGL, the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians. Suddenly, before my eyes, a group of about 15 lesbians with hammers and bats attacked the booth, smashing it to pieces and calling the 2 lesbians and 1 gay man working there fascists and using language I have never before heard. The 3 PLAGL workers complained to the Festival organizers and were told to leave. However, the 15 lesbian attackers were left to enjoy the rest of their day. Nice, huh?

That same day I was speaking to my friends that I don't believe in Gay Pride. I told them I believe that you cannot be proud of something you did not actively create, and since I didn't create my homosexuality I didn't think I should be proud of IT, but that I can be proud of the fact that I have become comfortable with my sexuality. As soon as the statement came out of my mouth, 3 men who were nearby verbally attacked me, saying that I was suffering from internalized homophobia, and that I was a disgrace to "the MOVEMENT". Again, because I wasnt a rainbow flag waving, screaming queen, I was not wanted by "the MOVEMENT".

Now, as far as PDAs are concerned (Public Displays of Affection), I am just as uncomfortable watching a straight couple in public sucking face and making fools of themselves as I am watching gay couples do it. They all do it for the same reason- TO GET ATTENTION.

Gay Marriage- oh boy. I am all for Gay Marriage, as long as the 2 men or women in question are marrying because they want to be in a monogamous committed lifelong relationship. Sometimes that is the case. However, I have seen too many Gay couples get married as a political act and then act as if they are not married to ever take it seriously. Honestly guys, if you are MARRIED you should not be going to bath houses in Montreal, fucking around at the Gargoyle House, or picking guys up at rest areas on the Interstate. I can't tell you how many guys in both Gay and Straight relationships have come to me asking for sex- HAVE SOME SELF-RESPECT.

Anyway, that's my rant, thanks for reading.

Signed

Re: Bicycles on the road (Vermont)

This is always a fun subject. Who really has the rights to the road? The roads were built for cars with taxpayer money, and since one may assume that a bicyclist is a taxpayer, they helped to pay for the building of the roads. But the fuel tax helps pay for the maintenance of the roads, and since bicycles don't use fuel, they don't contribute to said maintenance. However, it can also be argued that bicyclists don't contribute to wear and tear of the roads in a meaningful way and therefore should not be made to cover costs of maintenance. So while there is no question that cars have the rights to the road, since the roads were built for the use of motorized transport, and are maintained by a fuel tax, the other side of the coin is that the roads were paid for and are partially maintained by general tax dollars paid by all, whether they own or use motorized transportation or not. The law says that bicycles have a right to use a public road provided that they abide by certain rules. This however, is where my agreement with our pedal-powered friends in the spandex shorts ends. One of the requirements for bicycles to be used on the roads is that bicycles follow all of the same rules of the road as a motorized vehicle. Time and time again I see bicycles cruising through stop signs, making left turns at red lights, riding on the wrong side of the road, riding through stop lights, etc, etc, etc. Bicyclists seem to think that they have their own set of rules. As long as they keep on thinking like that and ignoring the laws of the road, I cannot consider them anything more than an obstruction and an annoyance on the road. Now, there IS a way to give yourselves a better name. First, no one really wants to see you squeezed into those spandex shorts like an over-stuffed sausage casing. If we wanted that, we would go to a beach up in the islands and look at all the Canadians. Second, and actually the best is to simply obey the rules of the road when you are on your bicycle. If you don't or wouldn't do it in your car, don't do it on your bike! That my friends is the only way you will EVER gain the respect of the motoring public. Until then, you better be paying more attention to me than I am to you.

Here is another observation from this weekend: Just as I thought I wasn't going to have to deal with bicyclists again until spring, now I have to deal with the even more annoying and dangerous idiots with their roller-skis and poles in the road. Man, those guys are an accident waiting to happen, legs swinging out and in, poles all over the place, hit a bump and they fall flat on their face right in front of someone's wheels.

Although I support anyone living their lives the way they see fit, and I generally am not attracted to Fox (or CNN for that matter), this story made me ask one question: What happened to religious freedom? Right or wrong this person who was fired has the freedom to believe in and practice their faith. If his statement could be perceived as a reflection of his faith, could it be considered religious discrimination to fire him, which is also illegal in the workplace? If she knows how he feels, isn't she disregarding his faith?

We're becoming homogenized as a society too quickly. There will come a day when we are unable to open up about anything with our co-workers without else facing a consequence.

After reading the previous posting, I have to agree with the poster.
I am a gay man and if the incident posted on the Fox News website is factual, this man was baited into a response.
This is a perfect example of another gay person screwing things up for the rest of us. Getting same-sex marriage rights was great, but now it is going to be called into question because of an idiot that felt she had a bit of power. It's hard enough being gay without having this to deal with on a regular basis.

I believe the Fox posting, so here is the information anyone would need to help with a boycott of Brookstone.
It's the Christmas season, so let them know you will not be purchasing from them this year and will let others know the situation.

It's Starting: Gay's Exercising Special Status (Burlington, VT)

Well, here we go!
A work peer insists on flaunting her pending gay marriage in MA by repeatedly bringing it up to someone she knows doesn't approve.
She does this specifically to "invoke his reaction". After attempting to get away from the woman, even leaving to go to a chapel to pray for strength, she continues.
She continues to brag on the fact that she is entering into a same-sex marriage, directing her comments directly at the man in question.
Finally, he makes a mild comment ("That just not right") and she instantly response with "Human Resources!" and heads off to report him

She baits him continually, he responds after being brow-beaten and then Brookstones fires him.

Here we see the power of the gay community in all its glory. Can't wait to see all the other abuses that are coming up.

Thanks to the folks in Maine for showing the way. Now all we need to do is tell our legislature we want the vote and they need to grow the balls to allow it.
(Like this is ever going to happen here --- right)

Here's the news story. Of course some of you won't read it because it's from FOX News.

Wow! I put Stupidville because and only because it was the first thing that came to mind, but thanks, YOU have totally proven my point!
You appear stupid when you instigate an online fight, not to mention you multiply this stupidity by calling out to someone who hasn't even been near a computer all day.
Do you really think that I or anyone else was going to hear you?! LOL!
"Get ahold of me by replying to this post."
Yeah sure, I'll do that.
As another posted said, why don't you just send an e-mail directly to me? Oh, you say that you have. Hmm, no. No you haven't.
And yes, you guessed it. I'm too "scared".
And while I'm at it I might as well point out other facts that prove my opinion about you was correct.

1. "You don't have the balls you 'peace' of shit"
I'm going to assume that you meant to say "peice" of shit. Do I really need to say anything more about this?

2. "Come bitch bring it on."
Again, I would assume you were attempting to say "Come on bitch, bring it on!" Or, maybe you were goin in a totally different direction, like: "Cum-bitch! Bring it on!"
Either way, you still failed to deliver the intimidation.

Thank you for proving my theory, though I really didn't need confirmation. Why on earth would you care so much about my personal opinion of a car dealership anyways?!
Could it be you that is the neanderthal? If so then I guess I should've given you more credit, because I never would have guessed this guy could turn on a computer, nevermind operate one.
Now, are you really this stupid, or are you having difficulties typing because your hands are dragging on the floor?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

come on stupidville bring your dumb ass on here and get a hold of me by replying to this post you dont have the balls you peace of shit!!!!!
if can write shit about people but you dont have the freaking balls to get back to them come bitch bring it on

Why do we do stupid things like IRV? I'll never figure it out, but if anyone wants solid proof that it doesn't work, just look at the twit Burlington has for a Mayor! Voting is the most important thing you can do as a citizen, and as such you can drag your lazy ass in to do it again and again until someone is voted in correctly. If that's too much for you to do, then you most likely shouldn't be voting in the first place. Now move back to wherever you came from.
I once read a statistic that essentially said that 60% of the voting age people in this State were not even born here, meaning native Vermonters are a minority. I'd even be willing to bet that the dip that wants to shoot moose hunters was from some other place too. Maybe someone should take him out hunting someday.
There now, was that a good rant?

A day when people can rest, there's no strict schedules, and it's always been the day dedicated to spending time with family. Well, in my household anyhow.

I've gotten a few things done around the house that I've been meaning to do, and now I'm taking off with my Father to go purchase another classic car that he has found!
Then later I have the joy of returning to the rest of my family for our Sunday Dinner...something that has always proven to be nothing less then amazing!
Ever have one of those days where you wake up feeling like it's just gonna be the BEST day EVER?! Well, that was today!

On a side note, to those of you who are still stuck with posting your opinion about EVERYTHING...move the fuck on in life! LOL!
Like, oh say...URANUS...dude, for real...
This board just isn't what it used to be.

I'm off...to enjoy this day to the fullest!
I won't be back to read whatever hate filled responses you sour people have to spew either! I'll be too busy buying a car and spending as much time outside as possible!

I suggest that you all do the same! It's too damn nice out to be stuck inside dwelling over what has been posted online by someone you don't even know...

Thank you so much for your 2nd post on the Great depression ( I posted the first) finally maybe we can get history back out there. The Dems need to understand that all of this was tried before and didnt work. Now on to the "in the know" it seems you dont know so much , what you lack in actuall facts you make up for in name calling you feel you are above everyone that voted against our Pres as does he. As far as the "ample evidence" that we knew the hijackers were going to hit the towers, Well we established that all the way back in 2001 remember the blame fell both on Clinton and Bush (more on Clinton) in which Clinton admitted. The intelligence that they had said Al quieda was looking to use aircraft as a weapon, it didnt say where, when ,or even what kind of aircraft. So mr Intelligence what would you have done to prevent this attack with this knowledge. There is nothing strange or unanswered about these events your just not willing to accept truth as an answer!

I look forward in continuing this debate young fella!

RE: depression debate (in the know)

Yeah, another way to put it is FDR started the great Ponzi scheme that is Social Security and the unsustainable public works projects that are our crumbling infrastructure which is also unsustainable. To paraphrase Margaret Thatcher: "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

Roosevelt the economist is unworthy of emulation. His first goal was to reduce unemployment. Of his own great stimulus package, the National Industrial Recovery Act, he said: "The law I have just signed was passed to put people back to work." Here, FDR failed abysmally. In the 1920s, unemployment had averaged below 5 percent. Blundering when they knew better, Herbert Hoover, his Treasury, the Federal Reserve and Congress drove that rate up to 25 percent. Roosevelt pulled unemployment down, but nowhere near enough to claim sustained recovery. From 1933 to 1940, FDR's first two terms, it averaged in the high teens. Even if you add in all the work relief jobs, as some economists do, Roosevelt-era unemployment averages well above 10 percent. That's a level Obama has referred to once or twice -- as a nightmare.

The second goal of the New Deal was to stimulate the private sector. Instead, it supplanted it. To justify their own work, New Dealers attacked not merely those guilty of white-collar crimes but the entire business community -- the "princes of property," FDR called them. Washington's policy evolved into a lethal combo of spending and retribution. Never did either U.S. investors or foreigners get a sense that the United States was now open for business. As a result, the Depression lasted half a decade longer than it had to, from 1929 to 1940 rather than, say, 1929 to 1936. The Dow Jones industrial average didn't return to its summer 1929 high until 1954. The monetary shock of the first years of the Depression was immense, but it was this duration that made the Depression Great.

This outcome is worth reviewing, component by component, for what it suggests about individual Obama administration projects. The first of these would be ambitious spending on infrastructure. Obama has said that he wants to "put people to work repairing crumbling roads, bridges and schools." In addition, he would like to modernize 75 percent of government buildings, as well as equip tens of thousands of schools with new technology.

Roosevelt, too, proceeded boldly on infrastructure. The budget of his Public Works Administration was so large that it shocked even the man who ran it, Interior Secretary Harold Ickes. Sounding a bit like Republicans today, Ickes said of his $3.3 billion allowance: "It helped me to estimate its size by figuring that if we had it all in currency and should load it into trucks, we could set out with it from Washington for the Pacific Coast, shovel off one million dollars at every milepost and still have enough left to build a fleet of battleships."

New Deal public-works spending did have a short-term effect, creating jobs and economic activity during Roosevelt's first term. Americans took heart at the sight of schools, swimming pools and auditoriums rising in nearly every county in the country. FDR so pumped up the federal government that 1936 was the first peacetime year when it spent more than states and towns. A master of timing, he even managed to get unemployment down to a low of 13.9 percent in November of that year, the month of the presidential election. The voters rewarded him by giving him 46 of 48 states.

But many of the jobs that the early New Deal produced were not merely temporary but also limited in economic value. It was in these years that the political term "boondoggle," to describe costly make-work, was coined. It came from "boondoggling," the word for leather craft projects subsidized by New Deal work-relief programs.

Roosevelt combined a stimulus project with his goals for social equity. He created the Rural Electrification Administration to wire the countryside. He also created the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide hydropower. One can picture private and public working together, and that's what Commonwealth and Southern imagined, too, at first. At a tense meeting at Washington's Cosmos Club in 1933, the company's chief executive, Wendell Willkie, begged a TVA officer, David Lilienthal, to strengthen public-private cooperation. Instead, Lilienthal waged war on Willkie, using the TVA's tax-free status to compete for customers and fighting Commonwealth and Southern in the courts. In 1935, Roosevelt signed a utilities law that so restricted private capital raising that it was known as the "Death Sentence Act."

At the time, observers told themselves that the shift caused no economic loss. But the stock indexes told the real story. Instead of matching or outperforming the industrial average, the Dow Jones utilities average lagged behind. The great "stimulator," government, had emerged as an opponent. The effect, beyond the tragic unemployment, was to slow down the creation of new companies. Even the New Dealers despaired. "We have tried spending money," Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau said to the House Ways and Means Committee in the late 1930s. "We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. . . . I say, after eight years of this administration, we have just as much unemployment as when we started . . . and an enormous debt to boot."

Mr. Not-so-Smart says:

So, who was president in the years leading up to the depression? Republicans Calvin Coolidge (a Vermontah) and Republican Herbert Hoover.

What caused the Great Depression? Absurd, unregulated financial irresponsiblitiy.

Who was the President who turned the tide and began the slow and painful recovery from Republican irresponsibility? Democrat Franklin Roosevelt, with massive government spending and employment programs that benefited the middle class and produced infrastructure that still exists today.

I think we can recover from this past Republican-led economic meltdown without a World War.

I think I've made my point.

I don't really want to get into that debate, but I will say that there are many, many, many strange and unanswered issues about that event that continue to be covered up.

And I don't give a rat's ass that you took my hard-earned tax dollars flying around your pretty billion-dollar aircraft shooting at sparrows; the views you espouse and seem to believe in are, to me, deeply against the best interests of our country, and your language and childish, stupid debating style is deeply stupid and profoundly against the values our country represents. Draw your own conclusions, fly-boy.

BUT, it has actually been a God-Send in the end. I'm saving a BUTT-LOAD of money!

I pay only $48.00 / month, and as we all know this covers ANY vehicle that I drive.
I pulled a few strings with finances and banking so that there were no "Auto Loans", thus the reason why I wasn't required to carry Full Coverage.
Hey, it's not the bank's property/investment, it's all mine, so screw them!

A few years ago, before the SR-22, I was paying (keep my "tarnished" driving record in mind) $328.00 / month for full coverage on just ONE of my vehicles! WHAT?!
So, yeah, to the dude who had all the problems with the DMV and whatever, you should have just paid for the SR-22. If you played your cards right then you could have saved yourself a butt-load of cash!!

Where in ALL of this does it say Republican's caused the great depression?

I do not have to resort to name calling. Here are actuall historic facts you are so wrong about the great depression its not even funny.

The Great Depression was an economic slump in North America, Europe, and other industrialized areas of the world that began in 1929 and lasted until about 1939. It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world.

Though the U.S. economy had gone into depression six months earlier, the Great Depression may be said to have begun with a catastrophic collapse of stock-market prices on the New York Stock Exchange in October 1929. During the next three years stock prices in the United States continued to fall, until by late 1932 they had dropped to only about 20 percent of their value in 1929. Besides ruining many thousands of individual investors, this precipitous decline in the value of assets greatly strained banks and other financial institutions, particularly those holding stocks in their portfolios. Many banks were consequently forced into insolvency; by 1933, 11,000 of the United States' 25,000 banks had failed. The failure of so many banks, combined with a general and nationwide loss of confidence in the economy, led to much-reduced levels of spending and demand and hence of production, thus aggravating the downward spiral. The result was drastically falling output and drastically rising unemployment; by 1932, U.S. manufacturing output had fallen to 54 percent of its 1929 level, and unemployment had risen to between 12 and 15 million workers, or 25-30 percent of the work force.

The Great Depression began in the United States but quickly turned into a worldwide economic slump owing to the special and intimate relationships that had been forged between the United States and European economies after World War I. The United States had emerged from the war as the major creditor and financier of postwar Europe, whose national economies had been greatly weakened by the war itself, by war debts, and, in the case of Germany and other defeated nations, by the need to pay war reparations. So once the American economy slumped and the flow of American investment credits to Europe dried up, prosperity tended to collapse there as well. The Depression hit hardest those nations that were most deeply indebted to the United States, i.e., Germany and Great Britain. In Germany, unemployment rose sharply beginning in late 1929, and by early 1932 it had reached 6 million workers, or 25 percent of the work force. Britain was less severely affected, but its industrial and export sectors remained seriously depressed until World War II. Many other countries had been affected by the slump by 1931.

Almost all nations sought to protect their domestic production by imposing tariffs, raising existing ones, and setting quotas on foreign imports. The effect of these restrictive measures was to greatly reduce the volume of international trade: by 1932 the total value of world trade had fallen by more than half as country after country took measures against the importation of foreign goods.

The Great Depression had important consequences in the political sphere. In the United States, economic distress led to the election of the Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt to the presidency in late 1932. Roosevelt introduced a number of major changes in the structure of the American economy, using increased government regulation and massive public-works projects to promote a recovery. But despite this active intervention, mass unemployment and economic stagnation continued, though on a somewhat reduced scale, with about 15 percent of the work force still unemployed in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. After that, unemployment dropped rapidly as American factories were flooded with orders from overseas for armaments and munitions. The depression ended completely soon after the United States' entry into World War II in 1941. In Europe, the Great Depression strengthened extremist forces and lowered the prestige of liberal democracy. In Germany, economic distress directly contributed to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933. The Nazis' public-works projects and their rapid expansion of munitions production ended the Depression there by 1936.

At least in part, the Great Depression was caused by underlying weaknesses and imbalances within the U.S. economy that had been obscured by the boom psychology and speculative euphoria of the 1920s. The Depression exposed those weaknesses, as it did the inability of the nation's political and financial institutions to cope with the vicious downward economic cycle that had set in by 1930. Prior to the Great Depression, governments traditionally took little or no action in times of business downturn, relying instead on impersonal market forces to achieve the necessary economic correction. But market forces alone proved unable to achieve the desired recovery in the early years of the Great Depression, and this painful discovery eventually inspired some fundamental changes in the United States' economic structure. After the Great Depression, government action, whether in the form of taxation, industrial regulation, public works, social insurance, social-welfare services, or deficit spending, came to assume a principal role in ensuring economic stability in most industrial nations with market economies.

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS

The Depression had profound political implications. In countries such as Germany and Japan, reaction to the Depression brought about the rise to power of militarist governments who adopted the regressive foreign policies that led to the Second World War. In countries such as the United States and Britain, government intervention ultimately resulted in the creation of welfare systems and the managed economies of the period following the Second World War.

In the United States Roosevelt became President in 1933 and promised a "New Deal" under which the government would intervene to reduce unemployment by work-creation schemes such as street cleaning and the painting of post offices. Both agriculture and industry were supported by policies (which turned out to be mistaken) to restrict output and increase prices. The most durable legacy of the New Deal was the great public works projects such as the Hoover Dam and the introduction by the Tennessee Valley Authority of flood control, electric power, fertilizer, and even education to a depressed agricultural region in the south.

The New Deal was not, in the main, an early example of economic management, and it did not lead to rapid recovery. Income per capita was no higher in 1939 than in 1929, although the government’s welfare and public works policies did benefit many of the most needy people. The big growth in the US economy was, in fact, due to rearmament.

In Germany Hitler adopted policies that were more interventionist, developing a massive work-creation scheme that had largely eradicated unemployment by 1936. In the same year rearmament, paid for by government borrowing, started in earnest. In order to keep down inflation, consumption was restricted by rationing and trade controls. By 1939 the Germans’ Gross National Product was 51 per cent higher than in 1929 — an increase due mainly to the manufacture of armaments and machinery.

I read your first two paragraphs and just stopped as it's obvious you are an idiot !!
...............................................................................................................................................................................................................

If I say it's false, it's false. I deal in facts, you make things up. It's deficit neutral because the Congressional Budget Office says it is, not because I say it. The money will come from savings from not having to pay for people going to the ER instead of a family doctor. It will also be paid for in higher taxes on people making more than $500,000 a year, or families making more than $1 million. They can afford it.

Yeah, thank you George Bush for the two wars, that fucking criminal idiot who couldn't finish the job in Afghanistan and invaded Iraq, a country that did nothing to us.

And if you are so incredibly stupid that you say the Republicans, who mount up trillions in deficits, are "fiscally responsible," when Democrats, who balance budgets and restore fairness to taxation, then you are beyond any kind of intelligent debate. In fact, our country would be way better off if you'd bury yourself in a pile of cow shit and shut the fuck up.

And by the way, the Great Depression, caused by Republicans, was resolved by Democratic government spending. And if you suggest that WWII brought us financial stability, you're a real patriot. Let's just keep killing young Americans in war so you can afford paying a few bucks in taxes. Honestly, you suck and you hate America, asshole.

Utterly and completely false. (Never mind that Republicans took the Clinton budget SURPLUS and turned it into a 2-trillion dollar deficit in eight years.)

If you had even the tiniest microscopic speck of intelligence you would realize that the current system is what is bankrupting this country and will make your child pay later. You'd also realize that your child probably doesn't have health insurance and would have to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to get coverage under the current system. Or that were it not for Democratic initiatives your child and millions of others now are covered by programs like Dr. Dynasaur. Or that the bill under consideration is actually deficit-neutral, despite the lies of your republican "leaders." Or that in any other CIVILIZED country in the world your child would not pay one single penny, ever, for health insurance. And can you answer me ONE fucking question: why is it better to pay thousands and thousands of your hard-earned dollars to insurance companies so they can deny your child health benefits instead of a few hundred extra dollars in taxes? You make no sense whatsoever. None. Zilch, zero, nada, none.
Just a random thought....
And since you brought up Obama, I find it interesting that he jumped on the race card with the Cambridge MA cop and the black professor, but had little to say about this or the conditions that allowed it or the measures that will be taken to reduce the chances of it happening again.
The shooter was given a pass several times on unacceptable behavior (both professional and military) by his superiors because he was a member of a "protected class" of individuals (Muslim).

This lead to the shooter committing a terrorist act with the aid and comfort of his superiors.

Political correctness has lead to the deaths of innocent individuals.

We need to abandon the foul, egregious concept of political correctness and stop declaring minorities as "protected classes" with special consideration when crimes are committed. ANY crime is a crime! Making a crime more critical because it involves a minority simply means that minorities are BETTER than regular folks.

Once again, the policies of liberals have lead to the death of innocents. Abortion, political correctness, etc., all brought to you by the party that "cares about the little guy", as long as the little guy isn't an unborn baby, a soldier or not a member of a protected class.

So I watched the movie 'Up' - Disney/Pixar.
Big Fat Deal.
So what?
But the premise got me thinking about a story I heard once. I don't think it was simply an urban myth. I think it was true. The story involved an older guy who would get shitfaced drunk and tie a whole shitload of helium-filled weather balloons to a lawn chair, which he would ride up into the atmosphere until the balloons deflated naturally and slowly, setting him down hundreds of miles from his backyard launch site. The problem was he had no authorization for these flights of incredible altitude and distance. He was reported after sightings by private and commercial aircraft pilots.

And when they told him he had to stop he kept doing it until they put him in jail.

Can anybody confirm or deny any of that?

Okay so this up and coming pop duo THE SUBMARINES are having a little success. An instrumental version of their original song "You Me and the Bourgeoisie" is on every Apple iPhone 3GS advertisement. Another song of theirs - with the words - was featured on an episode of "Nick/Tuck" and all the actors lipsynched the words while it played.
So that's all great. Good for them and all that.
The band is formed by romantically linked John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard. Blake Hazard is a cute young lady who was born and raised in Greater Burlington/Chittenden County, Vermont. She is also the great-granddaughter of American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald. She is clean, natural and smart. We like her.

But her band-mate - and boyfriend - looks like a real creep. I mean, look at this guy - he looks like a total Ted Bundy type. Look how he wears his hair! I think he is dangerous and will one day shock the world with a violent crime, possibly against Blake Hazard.

When she figures out that she can go solo and make ALL the money he's going to boil over and burn down.

Ya heard it here first.
