It is located in a dramatic spot, in between rhyolite peaks and the Dyrfjöll Mountains (1136 m). The area is very famous for stories of elves. Locals even believe that the queen of Icelandic Elves lived in the town. Álfaborg (Elf Rock), a small nature reserve is a tourist highlight of the area until now. Close to the town, you can also find the Islet Hafnarhólmi, a puffin colony with 10,000 pairs. Iceland’s best known artist Jóhannes S Kjarval grew up close to Borgarfjörður Eystri and took much of his inspiration from the area.
There are many hiking trails in the area.

If you feel you would be interested in volunteering your time to knit, crochet and/or sew chemo caps for patients please email me. I have a group of volunteers SHE Creations - Stitiching Heaven & Earth, who are volunteering their time to make caps for patients undergoing chemotherapy. One of the side of affects of chemo can be hair loss and baldness which can be traumatic in itself.

650,000 people are diagnosed every year in the US. Cancer Treatment centers are always very appreciative to receive caps for their patients and the patients even more so!!!

Most commerical caps are made for heads with hair and are made with wool or wool/blend. This can be uncomfortable to a patient as they can be scratchy. We want to give warmth, softness and comfort, so only acrylic, cotton, polyester blends are used. If the caps are seamless they can be worn to bed at night..called sleep caps.

My name is Cassie and I reside in central New Hampshire.

I so look forward to hearing from anyone who would be interested in volunteering their time for a wonderful cause. I will reply to your email as promptly as possible with further details and information.

I thank you so much in advance!!!! I await to hear from you.

I desperately miss being with babies and young children, especially since my Granddaughter has moved away. I'm hearing impaired without hearing aids so one-one-one in quiet settings is really essential to communicating verbally. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a need in the Middlebury to Burlington area so I can give gentle, quiet cuddles and love to a young child who has no special Grammie in their life. I would also be interested in reading one on one with a young child. I do have an extremely well-behaved service dog who would just lay by my feet while doing this. We both have excellent references .

Or, if there is a special needs child or infant who is not verbal and would enjoy just being rocked quietly and securely with love, please reply. I'm very responsible and experienced though my hearing issues limit my possibilities. ..........

Internships with Greenpeace!

Description:
Greenpeace, the world's leading environmental organization, is seeking passionate volunteer interns who are ready to join the fight to close Vermont Yankee and implement a clean energy future. Vermont's aging nuclear power plant has been around for 37 years, and its corporate owners are seeking a 20 year license renewal. Vermont Yankee has been plagued by safety breakdowns and mismanagement, and we have the safe energy sources to replace its output. We are organizing throughout the state to show the Legislature that Vermont Yankee must be shut down! Our interns play a critical administrative support role to make this work happen.

History
Greenpeace was founded in 1971 by a small group of activists standing up to nuclear testing off the Alaskan Coast. These daring few effectively won a total ban on nuclear testing and launched Greenpeace's legacy of "bearing witness" to environmental abuse. We continue to use peaceful direct action, creative confrontation, and grassroots organizing to build solutions to global warming, toxic pollution, and destruction of our ancient forests and oceans. Today, Greenpeace is the world's largest environmental organization, with 2.9 million members in 40 countries, and continues to lead the way to a clean and peaceful planet.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:
Greenpeace interns are driven, outgoing, reliable, fast-learners, and passionate about the environment. Global warming interns will assist with critical interactive research, administrative work, and logistics to support our campaign.

What you gain from a Greenpeace Internship:
-Hands on grassroots organizing experience, references, and a letter of recommendation to build your resume
-Campaigning experience with the world's largest environmental organization, Greenpeace!
-Experience building citizen power in strategic districts nationwide to stop global warming
-An opportunity to explore a career in the non-profit sector, politics, community services, activism, grassroots organizing, or natural resource management

Specific responsibilities include:
Managing research projects, coordinating with global warming team leaders, assisting in recruiting staff over the phone, logistics coordination via phone and internet, materials production, and additional duties as assigned.
Application instructions:
How to apply:
Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to apply immediately. To be considered for this unpaid internship, please email Jarred Cobb, Northeast Field Organizer, at jarred.cobb@wdc.greenpeace.org, subject line: INTERNSHIP. Please include your name, phone number, and email address and a brief essay about why you want to intern with Greenpeace and what makes you are a strong candidate. We ask for a 10-hour a week commitment (between the hours of 10am- 6pm, Monday-Sunday) for 2 months minimum (3 months preferred).

Internships start as soon as you are available!

This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

Caring Host Families Wanted for Upcoming 2010 School Year

Forte International Exchange Association (FIEA) is a State-Department recognized student exchange program based in Washington, DC. Since 2000, we have brought nearly 2000 international students to the US to study in public schools and experience American life and culture. We are currently seeking families to host students starting in the Spring of 2010. These students are selected for our program based on high academic achievement, strong English abilities, and interest in American culture. Host families are eligible for a modest $50/month tax deduction, but the real rewards are intangible: exposing your family to another culture, sharing your home and family life with a visitor from abroad, and making a personal investment in global cooperation and understanding.

Host families come in all styles and forms, but they are all part of the process that leaves students and families feeling culturally enriched with a larger picture of the world.

Please visit our website for more information: www.orgsites.com/dc/forte or email alex@forteintl.com directly.

All interested families please contact us! Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Educational & leisure activities for kids in a poor fishing village (Volunteer in Vietnam)

EDUCATIONAL AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN A POOR FISHING VILLAGE

         November 30 - December 11, 2009
January 4 - January 15, 2010

This project has been running successfully since 2004. The Youth House School is a small education center for disadvantaged street children and children coming from a poor fishing village, located in the outskirts of Hanoi. The international volunteers will help run the school and will be responsible for keeping the school clean, cooking free lunch for the children, and teaching them basic things about their countries, health, etc. The volunteers will also organize some leisure activities for youth after school. This is a time for cultural exchange and embracing new relationships. The international volunteers will work together with a team of local volunteers, led by a group leader.
The volunteers will teach around 15 children every day. Remember, the children are not used to rules and structure in their households, so volunteers must try to implement this by setting an example. The Youth House is also a place where young local people and international volunteers come to explore the cultural diversity, by teaching the children together or organizing leisure activities, such as taking the children to the swimming pool.
These activities are combined with projects to help disadvantaged people at the Fisher Village, who are very poor and live in slum-boats on the Red river. This is done by giving them food, medicines, water filters (for clean drinking water), toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes and free showers in winter, etc.
The Red River is the biggest river in Vietnam. The delta is located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city continues to expand with many people coming from the countryside into the urban area. This however, is an expensive endeavor with the government imposing a tax on people coming from the rural area to prevent a massive influx of people. Some people decide however to come despite this financial situation and thus must live in house boats at the river to escape from having to pay. Since they do not technically live in Hanoi they must pay for school which is usually free until the age of 12. The entire family must work hours that most people would consider inhumane. The children wander the streets begging and collecting rubbish. An entire family barely makes $2 a day.

For more info and enrollment, please go to: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-vietnam.htm

To learn more about the international volunteer workcamps go to: www.cadip.org/workcamp.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400
